Read your gmail from Firefox
I have a gmail account but hardly ever use it (because I have to login manually and check it). But I'm downloading the
Gmail Notifier so I can check my mail in Firefox. One day I might learn to
write my own Firefox extension.

Or maybe I should just upgrade my iBook
Hardmac.com has a
A step-by-step guide to turn your iBook12" into a PowerBook12"-killer. Am I brave enough to try it?! Probably not. Besides, it seems Intel-based iBooks are
coming in January...

Comparing Apples (iBooks) with Apple (Powerbooks)
The
Applecart has a
handy chart comparing Apples with Apples. I'd love to get a new Mac - something which can handle multi-track recording and editing as well as live playback - but I'm torn between 14" iBook, 15" Powerbook or 17" iMac...*sigh*

Cool site of the day: thecooler.co.za
Rob Luce is a musician who owns Cooler - a studio in Johannesburg which isn't just a place to record - it's a creative space. Rob says, "I believe that if you want to make great recordings you must start with an environment in which producers, musicians and engineers can relax and be creative."
Man - the picture of the studio is SUPERB! Great lighting, lots of space, 2 recording booths (2!) and a comfy-looking couch. Schweet.

Extending my iBook desktop
I have a lovely Mac laptop which has some interesting quirks. One of which is my screen->out function: it only lets me mirror my desktop on external displays - not extend it. This is one of my big reasons for wanting to upgrade to a powerbook. However, some nice German guy has published the
Screen Spanning Doctor. The only problem is I have to reboot after installing it. And I've been running without crashing or rebooting for:

Apple boot keys
I wanted to know how to boot our G5 using a different startup disk...turns out all I need to do is hold down the "option" key (that's "alt" for everyone else). Source:

Cool site of the day - banksy.co.uk
Banksy is a graffiti artist who goes around and (amongst other things) sneaks random bits of "art" into museums, expecting art critics to fawn over how "brilliant" it is. Like
this rat in wraparound sunglasses, carrying a rucksack and a microphone under the spraypainted caption, "Our time will come," snuck into the Natural History Museum.
. And here's a caveman pushing a supermarket trolley! Genius.

Biggest SA search engine to launch this month
Jonga.co.za launches this month - and claims to be a decent SA search engine.
Shaun Dewberry reviews the sneak preview. I don't use any SA search engines for SA stuff - just
Google.co.za.
Ananzi...yeah right.
Aardvark - nice, I just don't use it.
Funnel is new. But Jonga might be
just what the doctor ordered.

Hetzner supports cron jobs
Cron is a unix service which lets you automate something based on time - like sending an email every hour, or calling a web script. Turns out I need to do the second one occassionally with some sites which are hosted with
Hetzner, and
they allow it. Just drop them an email.

Stopping trackback spam
Some dumbasses have been spamming via trackback at

It's cheaper (and quicker) to fly to Hong Kong, use the internet and fly home than use Telkom ADSL
Scenario:
you want to download 100 gigs of data. Locally it'll take 9,5 days and cost over 9 grand. The flight to Hong Kong and back costs under 8 grand and internet access there is extreme (13 mins to download that amount of data [yeah right!]). A guy from
myadsl.co.za worked it out...more proof that
Telkom sucks.

Master Foo Discourses on the Graphical User Interface
Source.
One evening, Master Foo and Nubi attended a gathering of programmers who had met to learn from each other. One of the programmers asked Nubi to what school he and his master belonged. Upon being told they were followers of the Great Way of Unix, the programmer grew scornful.
“The command-line tools of Unix are crude and backward,” he scoffed. “Modern, properly designed operating systems do everything through a graphical user interface.”
Master Foo said nothing, but pointed at the moon. A nearby dog began to bark at the master's hand.
“I don't understand you!” said the programmer.
Master Foo remained silent, and pointed at an image of the Buddha. Then he pointed at a window.
“What are you trying to tell me?” asked the programmer.
Master Foo pointed at the programmer's head. Then he pointed at a rock.
“Why can't you make yourself clear?” demanded the programmer.
Master Foo frowned thoughtfully, tapped the programmer twice on the nose, and dropped him in a nearby trashcan.
As the programmer was attempting to extricate himself from the garbage, the dog wandered over and piddled on him.
At that moment, the programmer achieved enlightenment.

Sony stuffs up
Scenario: you're a Windows user who buys a new cd distributed by Sony. To play the cd you *have* to install Sony's software (the cd works fine on Mac or Linux) - and an extra programme called a rootkit which hides itself from your system and doesn't let you make more than 3 copies of the music. Good for Sony, bad for you, because they neglect to mention anywhere in the license agreement about the rootkit (which essentially has a signature like a virus). What's more, you can't uninstall it. And if you delete the files it installs on your systems you mess up Windows.
Mark Russinovich - who discovered the rootkit on his machine -
details this on his blog. And he's mad with Sony.
One of the comments refers to
MP3tunes.com, a site which pays royalties to musicians without the traditional distribution channels. A better idea, methinks.

Phishing scheme targets Standard Bank
The following email is bunk.
From: Standard Bank
Date: November 1, 2005 12:58:01 GMT+02:00
To: roger_@_futurechurch.co.za
Subject: Standard_Bank E-mail Security - roger_@_futurechurch.co.za
Dear Standard-Bank Member,
This email was sent by the Standard_Bank server to verify your e-mail address. You must complete this process by
clicking on the link below and entering in the small window your Standard_Bank account information. This is done for
your protection - because some of our members no longer have access to their e_mail addresses and we must verify it.
To verify your email address, click on the link below:
http://www.standardbank.co.za/AlEYbpwXOJ8MUeonVKypNDQS0STNWTg3YRJYn1y9wQMdn89whpix6zn2m3554
It's part of a phishing scheme where really nasty people who should have lots of hot pokers shoved up their nether regions decide to try and get credit card details from really trusting people who should know better. Note - even though the url here says it's the Standard Bank website when you click on it you'll end up at some weird Italian website which cunningly *looks* like the Std Bank site. Don't do it, Boris! Nooooo!
